About Lisa

Once upon a time, when Lisa was getting ready to leave for college, her father advised: "Choose something you can make a living at. You can always write on the side." After many years of adhering to this advice and pursuing a career in New York publishing as an editor, Lisa hereby declares that she will no longer write on the side. She now writes front and center! (She still likes to edit, as well.)

Lisa Meltzer Penn grew up in cold and cloudy Syracuse, New York, received a BA in English and Creative Writing from Binghamton University in 1986, and in 2007, an MA in English and Creative Writing from San Francisco State University, where she completed The Siren Dialogues.

In-between, she lived in Spain, traveled back and forth to an island, and had a successful career editing bestselling middle grade and young adult fiction, becoming known for digging into the bones of a story to bring out the best in it. All along the way, she kept writing.

Lisa lives in Belmont, California with her husband and two children. Her son and daughter are both avid readers and budding storytellers, as well as frequent subjects of her imagination. She's a member of the California Writers' Club, and Women's National Book Association, where she served on the board of the San Francisco chapter for several years.
